The Lizard Sea Shanty Festival & Outreach Programme Safeguarding Policy

  1. Policy Statement The Lizard Sea Shanty Festival CIC is committed to ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for everyone involved in our events and outreach activities, especially children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We believe safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and will take all reasonable steps to protect participants from harm.

  2. Scope of the Policy This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, performers, contractors, and partners involved in the festival and its outreach programme, including school visits, care home sessions, community workshops, and public events.

  3. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) The Festival will appoint a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who will:
  • Be the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns
  • Ensure all safeguarding concerns are recorded and addressed appropriately
  • Liaise with external agencies where necessary

  1. Code of Conduct All staff and volunteers must:
  • Treat everyone with dignity and respect
  • Always work in an open and transparent way
  • Avoid being alone with a child or vulnerable adult unless absolutely necessary
  • Report any concerns immediately to the DSL

  1. Safer Recruitment All staff and volunteers working directly with children or vulnerable adults will:
  • Be subject to appropriate background checks (e.g. enhanced DBS)
  • Provide references
  • Receive basic safeguarding training

  1. Working with Children and Vulnerable Adults
  • Activities will be age-appropriate and inclusive
  • Parental/guardian permission will be obtained for under-18s involved in outreach sessions
  • A risk assessment will be carried out for each outreach activity

  1. Reporting Concerns All safeguarding concerns must be reported immediately to the DSL. Where there is a risk of immediate harm, the police or local safeguarding services should be contacted.

  2. Review of Policy This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary.
